Steph leads the Helpful team. He gets hands-on helping clients put the digital tools and skills we’ve given them into practice.

He’s actively involved in work across the business, from digital strategy development to crisis simulation facilitation. He’s equally at home working on our products or delivering a key-note speech.

His experience over 15 years includes working with clients from all sectors. For Helpful, notable clients include Shell, the Committee on Climate Change, the UK Parliament, NHS and the Metropolitan Police.

Recent project highlights include:

  • counter-terrorism training exercises for the Home Office
  • supporting bloggers at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office
  • training thousands of government communicators in digital communication skills

Steph founded Helpful in 2010 after leaving the Civil Service. There, he was Head of Digital at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

His team earned a reputation across and beyond government for pioneering approaches to online consultation, work with online communities and social media monitoring. These were often based on the open-source WordPress platform.

Steph also hosted events aimed at digital practitioners. He is treasurer and a former organiser of UKGovCamp. This brings together people interested in the public sector’s use of digital.

He also launched the Digital Engagement Guide. This is a free, live collection of ideas, examples and practical help to use digital and social media in the public sector.

Steph is half-French, hates Jaffa Cakes, and makes pretty nifty scones and biscuits.
