We’re looking for a flexible front-end designer/developer with strong WordPress experience to help grow our development team. You’ll be an important member of the team scoping, developing, testing and supporting client websites and our in-house products based on the WordPress platform.

The role:

We build creative, interesting, useful things with WordPress – from helping scientists study Antarctica to engaging young people with careers and putting on unforgettable weddings.

This is a hands-on coding role. You’ll translate briefs and designs/templates into functional WordPress themes, integrating your own custom-written and third party plugins to deliver technically excellent, easy-to-use websites. We like and use PHP, SCSS, MySQL, Bootstrap, Javascript, Git, and Ansible among other tools.

Friendly, open communication is at the heart of our culture internally and with clients, and you’ll be a key participant in catch-up calls to review a Trello board, on Slack chats to scope a new feature, and in meetings or screencasts to demonstrate prototypes or examples you’ve created.

  • are already comfortable developing and customising responsive WordPress themes, managing a WordPress site and running training on WordPress for editors
  • have experience hand-coding HTML with modern techniques such as Flexbox, CSS Grid and frameworks such as Bootstrap 4. If you’re comfortable with React or Angular, that’s handy too
  • ideally, have some experience building elegant custom PHP/MySQL applications with security, performance and maintainability in mind
  • can show us a portfolio of WordPress sites you’ve built most or all of yourself
  • have clear communication skills and excellent written and spoken English
  • bring a common sense attitude to your development: you’re naturally on the side of the user, thinking ahead to future support needs and changes, and able to prioritise
  • are eligible to work in the UK and have supporting documentation

In return, we can offer a genuinely flexible and laid-back working environment, good tools and a mature project management process with nice clients.

n.b. We’re looking for more than just a freelance working relationship – it’s fine to hold onto a few private clients if you have them, but we’d like to have you as part of our team full- or nearly full-time. No WordPress outsourcers please. Agencies are free to drop us a line with their candidates but please respect our feedback if you don’t have what we’re looking for.

How to apply:

Please send:

  • your CV
  • links to at least thee examples of your WordPress work, including a link to your portfolio and/or repository
  • a covering email describing your experience and the kind of role you’re looking for

If you have what we’re looking for, we’ll invite you to a phone interview initially. If we both agree it’s worth taking it further at that point, we’ll invite you in for an interview and brief code test, and ask you to tell us about your work and experience.
