Detailed planning made a big difference to their campaign. Here\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecb.co.uk\/covid-19\" rel=\"nofollow\">their campaign hub<\/a> around how the wider cricket community has helped local communities though COVID.\u00a0 We&#8217;re proud to have worked with them on<a href=\"https:\/\/helpfuldigital.com\/fr\/project\/preparing-cricket-grounds-to-host-the-world-cup\/\"> #CrisisComms Training<\/a> ahead of the Cricket World Cup.<\/p>\n<h2>Free speech vs deplatforming<\/h2>\n<p>This episode of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sounds\/play\/m000r4vm\">BBC Sounds Media Show podcast<\/a> looks at whether de-platforming Trump and his supporters was the right thing to do, among the guests is\u00a0 the Chief Policy Officer from Parler.<\/p>\n<p>Vox looks at the effectiveness of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/culture\/22230847\/deplatforming-free-speech-controversy-trump\">social media bans at fighting extremism<\/a> citing studies that show it does have an impact.<\/p>\n<p>All social media channels have stepped up their automated efforts against misinformation and hate speech in recent weeks, but not always without issues.<\/p>\n<p>There has been a new wave of Me Too testimonies in France lately with #MetooInceste and #MeTooGay posts which led an influencial feminist account to post a tweet saying \u201cWhat do we do to stop men from raping?\u201c. <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/media-social-media-france-child-abuse-bills-246e0d86489e927c19f949739bf62133\">Her account was suspended by Twitter<\/a> due to this tweet, which led many journalists, influencers, and random users to share the same phrase and see if Twitter would suspend their accounts\/ and to create a movement to criticise Twitter for their moderation policies.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"fr\">Le compte de <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Melusine_2?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Melusine_2<\/a> suspendu par Twitter pour avoir post\u00e9 \u00e7a. \ud83d\udc47<\/p>\n<p>On va donc reposer la question <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TwitterFrance?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@TwitterFrance<\/a> : \u00ab Comment fait-on pour que les hommes cessent de violer ? \u00bb <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/IHE6YRGSyj\">pic.twitter.com\/IHE6YRGSyj<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 #NousToutes (@NousToutesOrg) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NousToutesOrg\/status\/1353013360086966273?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 23, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2>Misinformation and fake news<\/h2>\n<p>Fake news encompasses a range of different activities, in this case a Facebook group completely changed direction, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2021\/jan\/20\/far-right-extremists-take-over-uk-land-sales-facebook-page?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other\">exposing members expecting information about land sales to far-right extremism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter has introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.twitter.com\/en_us\/topics\/product\/2021\/introducing-birdwatch-a-community-based-approach-to-misinformation.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">Birdwatch<\/a>, a community-based approach to misinformation<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/gadgets-and-tech\/youtube-covid-19-coronavirus-misinformation-b1793492.html\">Youtube has now removed <\/a>more than half a million videos spreading coronavirus misinformation.<\/p>\n<p>Edelman\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edelman.com\/trust\/2021-trust-barometer\" rel=\"nofollow\">latest Trust Barometer<\/a> reveals an epidemic of misinformation and widespread mistrust of societal institutions and leaders around the world.<\/p>\n<p>And<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ox.ac.uk\/news\/2021-01-13-social-media-manipulation-political-actors-industrial-scale-problem-oxford-report\"> this University of Oxford report<\/a> found that social media manipulation by political actors is an industrial scale problem.<\/p>\n<p>Thinking beyond the pandemic about future risks: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/reports\/the-global-risks-report-2021\" rel=\"nofollow\">World Economic Forum\u2019s 2021 Risk Report<\/a> is an interesting strategic read.<\/p>\n<h2>Social media news<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newswhip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Facebook-Publishing-Q4-2020-final.pdf\">Newswhip has published their latest loo<\/a>k at the most engaging content on Facebook from the final quarter of 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Hootsuite have published their thoughts on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hootsuite.com\/research\/social-trends?utm_source=facebook&amp;utm_medium=owned_social&amp;utm_term=a104d974-83bd-4253-ab69-6dbc74aff0fa&amp;utm_campaign=all-social_transformation_program-social_trends_2021-glo-none----social_hootsuite_reporttitlecard---\">social media trends for 2021<\/a>. They have also joined forces again with We Are Social to produce their latest global overview of digital usage <a href=\"https:\/\/wearesocial.com\/blog\/2021\/01\/digital-2021-the-latest-insights-into-the-state-of-digital\">Digital 2021.\u00a0 <\/a>We Are Social have also published <a href=\"https:\/\/wearesocial.com\/thinkforward-2021\" rel=\"nofollow\">Think Forward 2021<\/a> covering how 2020 has changed our relationship with social media and what this means for 2021.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hootsuite.com\/linkless-tweets-experiment\">following Hootsuite\u2019s experiments<\/a> with understanding the engagement with tweets with and without links.<\/p>\n<p>But also feeling old and worried about whether we\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.emojipedia.org\/what-happens-in-the-tiktok-comments\">using the right emojis<\/a> these days.<\/p>\n<p>Nieman Labs has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.journalism.org\/2021\/01\/12\/news-use-across-social-media-platforms-in-2020\">analysed the interplay between social media and news<\/a>, and the sources US audiences use to get news content.<\/p>\n<p>We enjoyed this from Sue Serna, former Social Media Manager at Cargill, looking at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sernasocial.com\/blog\/no-we-cant-all-be-like-wendys\">the boundaries to humour<\/a> in the tone of voice of corporate social media channels:<\/p>\n<p>Facebook have published a new article detailing<a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2021\/01\/how-does-news-feed-predict-what-you-want-to-see\/?mc_cid=30c3a344db&amp;mc_eid=caa2d56aa4\"> how their algorithm works<\/a> to determine what appears in your news feed. Understanding how this works is really important when you are thinking about what to publish on your Facebook page and whether it is likely to reach many people.<\/p>\n<h2>Good digital communications<\/h2>\n<p>We love the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@blackcountrymuseum\">Black Country Museum\u2019s Tiktoks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Environment Agency has a fantastic network of trusted voices who represent the organisation on social media. Never are they more valuable than during times of flooding. It&#8217;s had huge levels of engagement and global press coverage.
