Firstly look after yourselves, here are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-55264224\">five ways to stay positive during lockdown<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Misinformation<\/h2>\n<p>After this week\u2019s events at the Capitol Building there will be plenty to digest in next month\u2019s Helpful Links on misinformation and the final days of the Trump presidency.<\/p>\n<p>Recently<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.twitter.com\/en_us\/topics\/company\/2020\/covid19-vaccine.html\" rel=\"nofollow\"> Twitter have announced their updated plans<\/a> to combat misinformation around the Covid vaccine. \u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/uk-government-monitors-conspiracy-theorists-coronavirus-strain-2020-12?utm_content=buffer19182&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_campaign=buffer&amp;r=US&amp;IR=T\">UK government is actively monitoring<\/a> for coronavirus misinformation too.<\/p>\n<p>This is a <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/episode\/4vqMyjMPaLZc06BBSzBEk3?si=JSP5hGY2Sc6zPBglvJmyAQ\">really interesting podcast<\/a> on misinformation, including the statistic that people over the age of 65 shared 7x more fake news than people between 18-29. Depressingly <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/american-adults-pew-survey-facebook-original-news-reporting\/?europe=true\">this study found that that nearly half of people don&#8217;t think the WSJ does do their own reporting<\/a>, a similar percentage of people do think that Facebook does their own reporting.<\/p>\n<h2>Social Media and Digital News<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2021\/01\/04\/is-substack-the-media-future-we-want\">Is Substack the answer<\/a> to social media fatigue and failing media?<\/p>\n<p>12 things James Whatley learned by <a href=\"https:\/\/whatleydude.medium.com\/12-things-i-learnt-taking-12-months-off-the-gram-54e257c95900\" rel=\"nofollow\">taking a year off Instagram<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Government Communications Service looks ahead to <a href=\"https:\/\/gcs.civilservice.gov.uk\/blog\/ten-campaign-trends-to-take-into-the-new-year\/\">future trends in social media and digital comms<\/a> for 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Pre Covid-19 New Year\u2019s Eve generated Facebook\u2019s biggest spike in messaging, photo uploads and social sharing, in March 2020 this was dwarfed by traffic spikes which continued through the year, <a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2021\/01\/new-years-eve-celebration-stats\/\">in turn this New Year set new records.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Discover which topics are taking hold in conversations across Facebook and Instagram and are on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/business\/news\/insights\/2021-topics-and-trends-report\" rel=\"nofollow\">cusp of going mainstream in the year ahead<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Instagram has shared their Year in Review: <a href=\"https:\/\/about.instagram.com\/en_US\/blog\/announcements\/instagram-year-in-review-how-memes-were-the-mood-of-2020\" rel=\"nofollow\">How Memes Were the Mood of 2020<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Joe Biden will take over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/12\/22\/22195713\/twitter-biden-reset-accounts-trump-potus-whitehouse\">the @POTUS Twitter account with zero followers<\/a> in a break from tradition.<\/p>\n<h2>Crisis Communications<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/f5bot.com\/\">F5Bot<\/a> is a nice free Google Alerts-style tool that pings you an update when your brand or keyword pops up on Reddit or HackerNews, where issues can sometimes bubble up first:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/charliepownall.com\/uk-government-covid19-response-timeline\/\">Amazing timeline of links<\/a> to the unfolding of the Covid crisis in the UK from December 2019, by crisis comms expert Charlie Pownall.<\/p>\n<p>As the massive FireEye and Solarwinds cyber incidents rocked the security world in late 2020, we\u2019ve seen several of our clients <a href=\"https:\/\/coppercourier.com\/story\/godaddy-employees-holiday-bonus-secruity-test\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">take an approach like GoDaddy\u2019s<\/a> to test-phishing their own people to see how well they stand up to social engineering attacks which could compromise security.<\/p>\n<p>Really insightful thread on Covid Comms and Crisis Comms from Gavin Kelly.\u00a0 Transparency is key but information also needs to be accessible.
