Inspired by Russell\u2019s Davies\u2019s <\/span>48 Laws of Powerpoint<\/span><\/a> but sadly not as thorough, coupled with hours of\u00a0practice over the last few weeks, these are my 12 Helpful tips for presenting on video conferences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Don\u2019t read the slides. It doesn\u2019t matter if you\u2019re in-person or virtual, this should be tattooed on the arms of presenters everywhere.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Arrive early. If you\u2019re working from home then you have no excuse. Be online ready for attendees to arrive.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Keep introductions short. Nobody has come to listen to your CV. To save time get participants to put their name and role in the chat.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Keep the content BIG and brief. Screenshares can be hard to read so don\u2019t make it more difficult.\"presenting<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Don\u2019t apologise for slow slides. Unless you have a catastrophic technical meltdown then a small delay or a bit of fiddling with screen size is part of online delivery.<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Use the chat. Getting people to add ideas in a chat is not a distraction, it will complement your presentation.<\/span><\/li>\n
  7. Don\u2019t present solo. Get yourself a partner in crime to share the delivery and help you to manage attendees.<\/span><\/li>\n
  8. Insist on everyone\u2019s cameras being on. Nobody likes presenting to blank squares.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  9. Make the slides available elsewhere. This gives you a back-up plan and allows participants to follow at their own pace.<\/span><\/li>\n
  10. Mix up your content. Big text. Video. Image. Lists.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  11. Don\u2019t ask open ended questions. It\u2019s intimidating for an audience to shout out unscripted answers instead offer yes\/no answers or even a poll if you\u2019re feeling adventurous.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  12. Have breaks. Even if David Attenbrough was presenting we would eventually get bored. Chunk up your session and keep the sections snappy and to the point.\"\"<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
