For many years data has shown that scientists, doctors and nurses are trusted more than journalists and far more than politicians. So we have long advised that they should be part of a good crisis response on anything health related. But is that changing? The evidence is inconclusive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pew data suggests<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/science\/2020\/05\/21\/trust-in-medical-scientists-has-grown-in-u-s-but-mainly-among-democrats\/\"> trust in scientists is holding steady in the US<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>.<\/strong> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But a Reuters Institute report suggests that <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/reutersinstitute.politics.ox.ac.uk\/trust-uk-government-and-news-media-covid-19-information-down-concerns-over-misinformation\">trusted voices are taking a hit in the UK<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>.<\/strong> \u00a0 Most recently though this report from the Institute for Public Relations<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/instituteforpr.org\/using-expert-sources-to-correct-health-misinformation-in-social-media\/?mc_cid=8d10f7ee02&amp;mc_eid=1e8c57ad0f\"> shows the value of experts getting involved in social media conversation<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>s<\/strong> to correct misinformation. As of April 2020, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalnewsreport.org\/survey\/2020\/overview-key-findings-2020\/\">trust in the media\u2019s coverage of COVID-19 was relatively high in all countries<\/a><\/strong>, at a similar level to national governments and significantly higher than for individual politicians. Media trust was more than twice the level for social networks, video platforms, or messaging services when it came to information about COVID-19.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ll be keeping a close eye on research into this subject over the next few months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social Media<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The major social media channels have continued their work to try combat misinformation and hate speech. But this hasn\u2019t been enough for many advertisers on Facebook, and <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2020\/jun\/26\/facebook-policies-hate-speech-advertisers-unilever\">some are now boycotting the platform<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There have also been announcements of new functionality and content:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tik Tok has launched <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrum.com\/news\/2020\/06\/25\/dont-make-ads-make-tiktoks-tiktok-opens-brand-facing-wing\">TikTok for business<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>.<\/strong> They are also <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-53079625\">planning educational content<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in partnership with English Heritage, other charities and universities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twitter has introduced <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Twitter\/status\/1273306563994845185?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>audio to tweets sent via iOS<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But so far there is no way of adding captions so they aren\u2019t accessible.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook Pages now allow you to start building an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialmediatoday.com\/news\/facebook-adds-option-to-send-marketing-emails-via-pages-app\/579003\/\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>email CRM for marketing<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether you make use of these new functions or not, what is the best way to measure the impact of your social media activity? This PR Week article looks at <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prweek.com\/article\/1686483\/exclusive-government-departments-best-using-social-media-during-covid-19?bulletin=uk\/publicsectorbriefing&amp;email_hash=&amp;utm_content=bufferf2367&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\">the \u2018best\u2019 government departments<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We agree that many of them are doing a good job, but aren\u2019t sure about using engagement as the only measure of success.
