They are an opportunity to build a relationship with your audience and give them a closer look at what you do and how you do it.<\/p>\n<p>They can also be really useful for telling stories. We spotted two good ones this week relating to the Supreme Court decision that the Prime Minister\u2019s prorogation of Parliament was unlawful.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ukparliament\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UK Parliament<\/a> explained the decision and its implications through an Instagram story<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ukparliament Supreme Court Instagram Story\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/399709937?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"352\" height=\"706\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/guardian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Guardian<\/a> covered Lady Hale\u2019s role and background through their Instagram story<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Guardian Supreme Court Instagram story\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/399709884?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"356\" height=\"686\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The UK Parliament story shows how it is possible to use existing photos to illustrate a breaking story, you don\u2019t always need to take new photos. They\u2019ve also included a poll at the end to capture feedback on whether their audience found it useful.<\/p>\n<p>The Guardian\u2019s story is well designed in their recognisable branding. The raw images are a marked contrast to the bold bright images in their feed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21138\" src=\"https:\/\/helpfuldigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/leam-spa-art-story-v-feed-300x263.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helpfuldigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/leam-spa-art-story-v-feed-300x263.png 300w, https:\/\/helpfuldigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/leam-spa-art-story-v-feed-768x672.png 768w, https:\/\/helpfuldigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/leam-spa-art-story-v-feed.png 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Top tips for using Instagram Stories<\/h2>\n<p>High quality, new photos are great, but don\u2019t worry if you need to re-use existing photos, or you can\u2019t get perfect shots, they don\u2019t need to be as polished as your main feed.<\/p>\n<p>Be consistent with the font, colour scheme, and the effects you use in your Stories so people recognise them.<\/p>\n<p>Think about how best to tell your story, is it photos, video, an interview, or could graphics help?<\/p>\n<p>Tools such Canva and Unfold can help you to design your stories; they make it quick and easy to use a consistent theme via apps on your phone.<\/p>\n<p>Get your followers to help you &#8211; ask to be tagged in posts and stories and then you can share those posts to your stories. Charities do this really well, including Macmillan Cancer support and updates from their supporters\u2019 Coffee Mornings. User generated content also tends to resonate well with followers.<\/p>\n<p>Use Highlights for key events or milestones &#8211; this means your story lasts indefinitely rather than just 24 hours and can easily be found when people look up your Instagram account. They sit just under your profile information. These are a great way to engage with followers and can help you to identify what your audience are keen to know more about or anything they might not fully understand about what you do.
